Hold Up. Let’s rewind this mixed tape. Scratch the vinyl.
We
‘re all about to find out what The Distortions found when they
stepped outside Pizza Rock. And trust, you’ll be just as surprised
as them. But, who are The Distortions? Well, to begin with, The
Distortions began when Tosh acquired a bass at the end of her 5th
grade year. Her grandmother had saved up enough money to buy Tosh a
bass they saw hanging from the pawn shop window.
Tosh
knew she’d never be able to hold such a beauty, much less play one.
But her grandmother saw how big 12 year old Tosh’s eyes grew at the
sight of that huge Fender Jazz bass. 50 dollars was a great deal of
money at that time. Especially because Tosh’s grandma, Maria,
didn't make much working as a maid for the local hotel. But Maria
saved every penny she could so her granddaughter could have the shiny
electric blue beauty. And so, Tosh acquired a nifty Fender Jazz
bass.
The
day she got it, she ran to show off her new prized possession to
Radio and Davey. Their eyes almost rolled out of their sockets when
she pulled it out and offered them the bass. They both
stretched out their greasy fingers to touch it.
“Woah!”
Radio and Davey both said.
“Nuuu,
you’ll get it all greasy with your pizza crusted fingers.” Tosh
pulled her bass away. Davey licked his fingers and smiled.
“Does
this mean we’re gonna start a band like The Germs and Black flag?”
He curled his hands into fists and pretended to play some air drums.
“I’ll bang on the drums at the speed of lighting. Yeah?” Radio
laughed.
“I
bet my dad has an old guitar laying around in the attic! I’m gonna
ask him! Then we can really form a band and be punk stars!”He then
proceeded to play air guitar as Davey was still playing on his
invisible drums set. This made Tosh’s heart happy. Her two best
friends just made a band with her and they didn’t even know how to
play a single note. This would be fun.
And
fun it was. Radio’s dad didn’t have a guitar laying around but he
was more than happy to get his son one. Davey’s parents always gave
him anything he wanted so it was no surprise when he opened his
garage and there was a brand new wine red Tama sitting on an old rug.
And thus, The Distortions were born.
Over
time, they would learn to play their instruments together. They’d
all pick a song and learn to play it; then another and another.
Until, finally, Tosh was comfortable covering any Rancid song.
It
wasn’t until high school that they really started writing good
lyrics. Before, songs had been mostly about eating pizza and guzzling
soda. Or about how jocks were always so mean. High school brought
puppy love. And high school also brought Emily into Radio’s life.
Then the real songs about real feelings came to life
It
wasn’t just love, though. They’d write about hate, and the world,
and the government trying to corporate everything. The true roots of
punk rock started to take form. All of this so that they could be
ready for what they were about to face on that fateful day the power
plant exploded.
